We don’t know. It depends on how automation and AI evolve. This is an important information need for DOTs and $ need to be invested in what if analysis and scenario development. DOT needs to be proactive in understanding which trajectories and decisions provide which results so that we can guide the integration of AVs and AI in line with our strategic goals and the public good.
The automation that everyone is talking about is the front facing technologies that have the potential to pilot car, buses, and trains. While this is exciting, the most action is actually behind the scenes, where public agencies and private companies are using new data to improve their decision-making processes, enhance freight and passenger routing, and strategically target investments.
